Gulf of Mexico, oil and gas facilities emit approximately one-half a teragram of methane each year, comparable with large emitting oil and gas basins like the Four Corners region in the Southwest US.
The effective loss rate of produced gas is roughly 2. Offshore harvesting accounts for roughly one-third of the oil and gas produced worldwide, and these facilities both vent and leak methane.
Until now, only a handful of measurements of offshore platforms have been made, and no aircraft studies of methane emissions in normal operation had been conducted.
Each year the EPA issues its U. Greenhouse Gas Inventory, but its numbers for offshore emissions are not produced via direct sampling. The study identified three reasons for the discrepancy between EPA estimates and their findings:.
Offshore oil and gas platforms release more methane than previously estimated
The findings were published today in Environmental Science and Technology. Eric Korta U-M associate professor of climate and space sciences and engineering, said EPA officials are already making adjustments to correct their count of offshore platforms operating in the Gulf of Mexico. But emissions estimates, particularly for shallow waters, still need adjustments. In addition, those shallow-water discrepancies warrant further investigation, Kort added, since deep water facilities may be sending some of the oil and gas they produce via pipeline to others located closer to shore.
Tubes along the wings of the plane drew in air that was pumped to the equipment for analysis of the amount of methane included as well as wind speed.NewsHour Weekend preview clip: Israel develops offshore natural gas reserves
Circling a single platform gives researchers a better idea of how much methane that single source is emitting. In addition to 12 individual facilities, the flights also covered larger geographical areas. Flying downwind from clusters of 5 to 70 oil and gas facilities, and taking similar measurements, researchers can evaluate how well inventory estimates compare with large numbers of platforms. As a pilot study, Kort said the research is promising but has gaps. Greater statistical sampling and identification of the cause of high emissions can guide mitigation and improve reported emissions.
To further the work and fill in these gaps, new aerial sampling is in the works funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Our leadership, world-class facilities and global impact are enabled by those who share our passion.
Empower the next big thing from this department. Eric Kort.Workers on OMV's Maui A platform are sacrificing being with their families, staying offshore for a month at a time while they work to keep gas flowing during the Covid crisis.
The Pohokura rig. Photo: Supplied. Staff levels on Maui A off the Taranaki coast have been cut from 65 to 10, and no one is stationed on Maui B. Staff numbers at the onshore production station have dropped to as few as three people. Maui Operations manager Warwick Smith said the field's operator OMV had also ditched the day roster for its offshore workers in favour of a four-week turnaround as it attempted to maintain physical distancing between staff.
Shift rotations were being kept separate and staff were required to undergo health screening before going offshore. They recognise that this is an essential business, but also that they are willing to be flexible which is fantastic.
Some of them will have young families and some will have family members who need additional help. Smith said this was normally a busy time for projects and maintenance, but once the situation with Covid had become clear operations were scaled back to core production. He said those that were no longer required for rotations on Maui A were working from home, put on standby or had been let go.
The campaign using the Archer Emerald rig was considered too risky because it included managing shift changes involving a large international workforce. Designed to extend the life of the Maui field, the in-fill work had been suspended for an initial three months. The COSL Prospector rig, which is contracted to Austrian-based OMV, has just completed drilling the Toutouwai-1 exploration well off the coast of Taranaki, the results of which are due shortly, and was set to drill Maui-8 next.
The Gladstone-1, off the coast northwest of New Plymouth, and Tawhaki-1 in the Great Southern Basin were unsuccessful, leaving Toutouwai-1, which is north of the existing Tui field, the last hope from this season's programme.
Offshore from Waitara, another OMV operation - Pohokuram which produces about 40 percent of New Zealand's gas - was in the midst of a scheduled maintenance shutdown as the lockdown approached. Senior operator Todd Lindsay said the team doing offshore pipeline maintenance work based on the Norman Baltic faced the biggest challenges. It's been very challenging for them. Lindsay said the automated nature of the Pohokura production station and platform, which were run remotely from an office in New Plymouth, was a bonus when the lockdown came into force.
It was set up like that to minimise the health and safety risks to personnel by not having personnel on the plant and running it remotely," he said.
In response to the Covid crisis the operators had been divided into two teams of three, one group operating from New Plymouth and one from the production station. The future of offshore oil and gas exploration in New Zealand in doubt after OMV announced today it is postponing drilling its Maui-8 exploration well indefinitely due to the Covid crisis.
A New Zealander who spent 18 years working in a senior position on oil rigs says he and others, were snubbed and foreign workers favoured for jobs in Taranaki. Drilling for oil and gas in deep seas off the south east of the South Island has turned up no significant find for the Austrian-based oil giant. Security officers have begun to dismantle a 'history of oil museum' erected by protesters in the entrance of OMV's New Plymouth headquarters.
